Chinese Embassy attack- Kyrgyzstan


SITUATION

According to the Shanghai list, it was reported that Kyrgyzstan authorities have blamed Uighur militants for the suicide bombing on the Chinese embassy that occurred on August 30th, 2016 in Bishkek.

The attack was carried out by a driven car smashing through the gates before exploding in the embassy compounds. The blast left the driver later identified as Zoir Khalilov, an ethnic Uighur, dead and injuring 3 Kyrgyz nationals working as security guards at the compound.

According the Shanghai list, Kyrgyzstan State Security Service said the suicide bomber held a Tajik passport and a member of the Eat Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

CHALLENGE

In the course of investigation, “ it was established that the terrorist attack was ordered by Uygur terrorists groups active in Syria and affiliated to the terrorist organization the Nusra Front whose emissaries financed the terrorist action” according to South China Morning Post.

State Security Service also added that a Kyrgyzstan native living in Turkey with the help of a Syrian explosive specialist holding a Tajik passport coordinated the attack. Five other suspects involved in the attack have been arrested while four others are suspected to be in Turkey. The suspects arrested are Southern Kyrgyz nationals except for the suicide bomber.

The complex web of events has made the region contentious and volatile. For some time, China has been accusing ETIM of scaling up attacks and raising tensions in the western region of Xinjiang, while some experts claim that escalation in violence is caused by China’s treatment of ETIM and other Uighurs fuels the unrest, sympathy and support breeding resentment abroad.
