Turkey detained more than 400 suspects for Terrorism financing-Brainwave ScienceSITUATION

Turkish police detained 417 individuals in a major nationwide crackdown on illicit money transfers to individuals of Iranian lineage living in the United States. Police arrested the residents on suspicion of financial crimes, including financing terrorism after prosecutors issued warrants in Istanbul, Turkey. Hurriyet newspaper said on its website that among those facing arrest were individuals with links to Kurdish, leftist and Islamist militant groups and some were also being investigated for drug smuggling.

According to the law enforcement statement, 417 suspects have been identified and so far, 216 suspects have rounded up in the operation where theses suspects simultaneously made more 28,000 bank transfers in small domination mostly to Iranian living in the US, an amount to 2.5 billion Lira ($419 million) have been transferred to bank accounts abroad.

Those conducting the money transfers earned a commission, but it is still ambiguous as who these individuals were and what was the plan? The suspects are being interrogated on suspicion of creating a criminal gang and violating laws to tackle money laundering and the financing of terror, however; the investigation is still ongoing as no connection has been proven yet.

CHALLENGE

In order to survive and strike, the terrorist organizations are sponsored by radicals around the globe, especially in the Middle East. Terrorist financiers purposely do not send large amounts of money to avoid the attention of both governments and financial institutions. Tracking the money and recipients is a major difficulty for law enforcement combatting terrorist financing. Terrorist organization adapt to innovative technologies and methods such as social media payment to attract and move their untraceable money. Francis Ricciardone, former US Ambassador to Turkey, claimed Turkey had directly supported and worked with the terrorist groups such as Al Qaida, al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham, especially those active in the Syrian Civil War.

In recent times, the issue of foreign money transfers has become politically sensitive in Turkey, which is in the throes of a currency crisis. The lira has fallen about 40 percent against the dollar this year, prompting President Tayyip Erdogan to warn Turks against sending money abroad if it is not for investment. “We will not forgive those who resort to smuggling money abroad if it is not to grow, develop and spread their business, trade and investments,” Erdogan said in a speech to business leaders in April, according a Reuters news report.
