NSG seeks nod to support forces in J-K counter-terror operations

National Security Guards has approached the home ministry and top national security planners seeking support for counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative aims to maintain the cutting edge of NSG and acquire necessary on-field operational experience for its experts.
The National Security Guards proposal comes after security forces lost troopers in high-risk house counter-terror intervention operations. These were used to neutralize holed up terrorists or fidayeens (suicide attackers) in densely populated localities of the valley.
Security forces try to tire out the terrorists by constantly firing at the adversary with high caliber weapons. The rate of firing is often such that the structure collapses or catches fire with the holed up terrorists being collateral damage.
The NSG HIT teams use state of the art Heckler and Koch MP5 sub-machine guns, gas guns, M 107 Barret sniper rifles, through-the-wall radars, corner shot rifles and C-4 explosives to neutralize holed-up terrorists with minimum casualties and damage to the structure. A typical NSG HIT team has six troopers led by a non-commissioned officer along with demolition experts and crack marksmen.
The Modi government is considering NSG’s proposal, while the elite force also offered to let its HIT teams participate and serve in special counter-terror operations in the Valley. The NSG also took the proposal to CRPF – a paramilitary force involved in counter-insurgency activities in the restive state.
The NSG wants to test its skills also for battle inoculation. Their last success was when their neutralized 4 Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in the Pathankot air base attack in January 2016. They also tackled terrorists involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attack and the September 24, 2002, Akshardham temple attack in Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
It’s no easy task for law enforcement to protect national borders and citizens in today’s world. With terrorism constantly expanding and on the rise, their challenges become greater and harder. Counter-terror operations are even harder to be carried out.
