Nipsey Hussle, the 33-year-old Los Angeles rapper who earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, was shot and killed outside of a clothing store he owned on Sunday. An autopsy found he had been shot in the head and torso and was classified as a homicide.
Monday evening, Los Angeles Police Department identified Eric Holder, 29, as a suspect in the shooting, which injured two other people. LA police revealed identification of the suspect after a stampede broke out during the gathering of hundreds of fans and local residents. The suspect was last seen in a white 2016 Chevy Cruze with the California license plate. Investigators speculate that an unidentified woman was also engaged in the crime.
According to Hussle last tweet, which said “Having strong enemies is a blessing”, LA authorities suspect Hussle may have noticed coming trouble. Lt. Chris Ramirez of the LAPD said suspects were at large and the motive behind the crime hasn’t been determined yet.
Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, was highly respected personality in the hip-hop community and in south Los Angeles, where he grew up. Los Angeles officials said, “We lost a great musician.”
According to LA police, three men were shot outside of Marathon Clothing when a gunman fired shots at the rapper. The other two victims are in a serious condition. LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said, LA is hurt deeply each time we lose a young life to senseless gun violence.
His hip-hop friends and other Hollywood celebrities, including Rihanna and Snoop Dogg, mourned on social media, with many pointing out his particular role in uplifting African Americans. Nipsey Hussle told in an interview he got involved in street life as he tried to support himself, and he joined the gang Rollin 60’s Neighborhood Crips as a teenager.
Hussle said, “I grew up in gang culture. We dealt with death, with murder. It was like living in a war zone, where people die on these blocks and everybody is a little bit immune to it.”
The Rollin 60’s Neighborhood Crisps, also known as the Rich Rollin 60’s, was classified as the largest African-American criminal street gang in the city of Los Angeles with over eight thousand active members. The gang was engaged in homicide, assault, rape, bank robberies, drug trafficking and more.
According to LAPD and FBI, there are more than 450 active gangs in the City of Los Angeles and over 33,000 violent street gangs in the United States. Many of these gangs have been in existence for over decades and have worked in sophisticated and well-organized manners. Due to growing poverty and desperation for glory, gang membership has continued to advance over the past especially among teens and eliminating them has become a difficult challenge for law enforcement agencies. One of the major factors of the survival of these criminal gangs is through drug and gun trafficking, prostitution and human trafficking. The existence of a gang is so wide that containing it would require accurate intelligence and links.
When gang members hit rock bottom during the reality of gang life and struggle to exit a gang, their lives are constantly threatened. As gang leaders feel threatened due to such decision and most of the ex-gang members have experienced harsh retaliation in the past. On the other hand, thousands have died due to gang clashes over the occupancy of the territory. Recently Gambino Mob Boss, Frank Cali, was assassinated in New York.
Nipsey Hussle, the ex-gang member, was working to eliminate gang violence which he had witnessed. According to reports, Hussle had an appointment with Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners President Steve Soboroff “to talk about ways we can stop gang violence.” The question for our readers and law enforcement personnel is whether Nipsey Hussle assassination is linked to gang violence or gun violence? Whatever it is, how will law enforcement agencies fight and ensure that such violence won’t occur again?
California senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris said, “Nipsey’s activism, leadership, and dedication to the community was an inspiration for Californians and beyond.”
Cracking Nipsey’s case open has become the urgency for Los Angeles Police Department to maintain the peace within Nipsey’s fan and reverse-engineer that specific information to eliminate the existing criminal gangs- the dream of Nipsey Hussle.
