The Netherlands accused Russian GRU members in a cyber-attack on a global chemical weapons agency. On October 4, 2018, the Netherlands Ministry of Defense published an information about 4 men who are the citizens of Russia. According to the report, GRU members are suspected in a cyber-attack plot against the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.
During the meeting, Defense Minister of the Netherlands Ank Bijleveld-Schouten made the announcement alongside Britain’s ambassador to the Netherlands, saying the alleged operation to attack the OPCW was disrupted on April 13th . They added that a cyber-attack operation by Russian military intelligence agents targeting the agency was thwarted earlier this year.
Officials published photos of suspects as well as an image that shows a vehicle seized near the OPCW headquarters in The Hague. The vehicle contains equipment allegedly used by Russian GRU military intelligence agents in a plot to hack the chemical weapons watchdog agency. The head of the Netherlands’ own military intelligence agency confirmed suspects were expelled from the Netherlands immediately after the plot was foiled.
The latest story about the accusation against Russia has brought anxiety in the world community. After the announcement by the Netherlands, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Russia from its ‘reckless’ behavior telling that ‘Russia must stop its reckless pattern of behavior, including the use of force against its neighbors, attempted interference in election processes, and widespread disinformation campaigns.’ At the same time, Russian representative called the latest charges against Russia ‘big fantasies.’
British Ambassador to the Netherlands Peter Wilson noted that cyber-attack happened in April. At the same time, the OPCW worked on confirmation of Britain’s allegations that GRU agents attempted to murder Russian ex-double agent Sergei Skripal in the UK, and to confirm an alleged chemical attack by Syria’s Russian-backed military in Syria. For the whole world, it is very important to find out a what is the real involvement of Russian GRU in this cyber-attack on OPCW and determine the real connection of its attack with the investigation of Skripal’s case and Syria’s attack.
