February 16th, 2018: High school shooting attack in Florida causes 17 deaths

At least 17 people are dead after a 19-year-old man opened fire at a high school campus in Parkland, Florida. Twelve people were found dead inside the school, two were killed outside the building, one in the street and two died later in hospital from their injuries. The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, is a former student at the school who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons. He was armed with an AR-15 rifle, police declared.  The suspect escaped the police when the students fled but has now been caught and is in the law enforcement’s custody.

Three people remain in a critical condition and three others are in stable condition, health officials said. The suspect had reportedly been receiving treatment for mental health issues. This was not the first time when the suspect would come to school armed with a gun.

This is the sixth school shooting this year with victims and it’s the deadliest since 26 people were killed at Connecticut school Sandy Hook in 2012 by an armed suspect. It also is the deadliest ever at an American high school, surpassing the 1999 rampage at Columbine high school in Littleton, Colorado, where two teenagers killed 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

Mr. Cruz was taken into custody without incident in the nearby town of Coral Springs about an hour after he left the high school, according to police.

President Donald Trump tweeted his “prayers and condolences” to those affected, but decided not to speak about the attack, reports said. Florida Senator Marco Rubio tweeted that the shooting was “designed & executed to maximize loss of life”. Congressman Ted Deutch, the district’s representative, tweeted: “I’m sick about this news from home. Just spoke with the sheriff. This is devastating.”




This tragedy is only the most recent one and with most deaths in a series of long similar actions taking place in the United States. In a changing world, police organizations are forced to continuously adapt and evolve to remain effective.
