Attack on US embassy in Cairo

A would-be bomber tried to hurl an explosive device into the US Embassy in Cairo but was stopped and arrested by Egyptian security forces, according to reports. The man was detained after throwing an explosive device which detonated near the US Embassy.

No casualties were reported. A witness said she heard a blast and then saw a man with a backpack that had caught on fire close to the Semiramis Hotel, across the road from embassy premises. The suspect was also carrying a firearm and a second explosive device, according to Egyptian security forces. The area around the embassy has for decades been heavily policed, with concrete barriers blocking vehicular traffic in its immediate vicinity. The British Embassy is located across the road from the U.S. embassy building.

The US Embassy in Cairo said on its Twitter account that it was aware of the incident and asked people to avoid the area. The area was cordoned off by the security forces shortly after the incident and there was an unusually heavy presence with dozens of officers monitoring the premises.
